First Look: An American Artist

As she enters her 90th year, Gloria Vanderbilt is as energetic as ever. In the midst of filming a documentary for HBO with director and producer Liz Garbus, Vanderbilt is exhibiting over 50 of her new works (paintings, gouaches, pastels, and collages) at the 1stdibs Gallery (at the New York Design Center, 200 Lexington Ave., nr. 32nd St., 10th fl.). The show, “The Left Hand Is the Dreamer,” opens February 27 and runs through March 23. All work will be for sale at the gallery and on 1stdibs.com starting February 27. Photo: Josh Gaddy for 1stdibs

Vanderbilt’s work is always highly personal, tapping into her particular passions and friendships. Of her new subjects, she puts it simply: “What interests me most in painting is color, narrative, but above all, mystery.” Photo: Josh Gaddy for 1stdibs

Vanderbilt’s life has had so many fascinating chapters filled with adventures, romances, and challenges. These paintings, perhaps less abstract than her previous works, are almost like pages from a dream. Photo: Josh Gaddy for 1stdibs

Many of the pieces include notes written to close friends, such as Joyce Carol Oates and Carol Matthau. Photo: Josh Gaddy for 1stdibs
