The Chosen One

For John and Dominique de Menil, enlisting fashion designer Charles James to decorate their Philip Johnson–designed house in 1950 solidified them as the aesthetic outliers of Houston, Texas. But they would prove themselves design visionaries to the end.

This process video from Diller Scofidio + Renfro gives you a sense of just how incredibly complex each one of James’s dresses was to create. It also illustrates how the architecture firm had to analyze the designs before they could begin to develop the animations that are an integral part of the “Charles James: Beyond Fashion” show.
