Opening this February 15, the Museum of Modern Art’s “Foreclosed: Rehousing the American Dream,” curated by Barry Bergdoll, will present an architectural response—by five teams of architects—to the financial crisis. WORKac’s proposal, “Nature-City,” in Keizer Station, Oregon, seems to say: If the suburban model of single-family houses has imploded, economically and environmentally, why not try something that’s both more urban and more rural? The complex would include waterfalls and farms. And one residence, Hill housing (top right), would be designed around a methane dome where biosolids are treated—generating compost for gardens and heat for the rooftop swimming pools.
