party town

Liam Neeson! Magic Johnson! Aretha!

We’re not saying they’re open to the public, and we’re not saying you’ll necessarily be able to get in if you show up. But here are the big-name parties on tap for tonight. Expect to hear about them in the next few days’ gossip columns.

Last week we noted that a certain standard variety of New York party involves “Hollywood types, moguls, and Lou Reed.” To clarify: We were referring to Lou Reed, the archetype, not Lou Reed, the actual person. The role of “Lou Reed” may be played by David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Debbie Harry, or any musician whose awesome, rock-and-rolling mid-seventies self would, were they to take a trip in the Sellout Time Machine and meet their present-day gala-hopping VIP-section Jack Welch–mingling ass, rob themselves and use the money to buy drugs. We’re just saying. Anyway, tonight:
Condé Nast Traveler Reader’s Choice Awards. Museum of Natural History, Central Park W. at 79th St., 6 p.m. Promised to be there: Liam Neeson, Ivanka Trump, Diane Kruger, Erika Christensen. What if … Liam Neeson turned out to be Erika Christensen’s former boss? What if … she was the girl in red flirting with you? What if … we hate the subway ads for Six Degrees so much that our jokes about them don’t even make sense?

Hip-Hop Summit Action Network Action Awards. The Lighthouse, Pier 61, Chelsea Piers, 6:30 p.m. Alleged to be there: Magic Johnson, Kanye West, Steve Stoute. Steve Stoute makes his living setting up meetings between rappers and corporations. Despite our aforementioned anti-sellout feelings, we think that sounds like a fun job.
Americans for the Arts Awards. Cipriani, 110 E. 42nd St., nr. Lexington Ave., 6:30 p.m. Cited on the press release: Mario Cuomo, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tim Gunn, Aretha Franklin, Jeff Koons, and … David Bowie!
Power of Film Gala for FilmAid International. Time Warner Cafe, 1 Time Warner Center, nr. 59th St., tenth fl., 7 p.m. They’re claiming: Richard Holbrooke, Jane Rosenthal, Christy Turlington, Ed Burns, Ken Burns, Fred Burns, Sam Burns, the Burns Family Singers, Kareem Abdul Burns. We made up some of those names. But not this one: Elvis Costello.
