Yankees starting pitcher Cory Lidle, a licensed pilot who talked to the Times last month about earning a pilot’s license and purchasing an airplane, was flying his four-seater Cirrus SR20 this afternoon when it crashed into an apartment tower on the Upper East Side, killing himself and at least one other person.

Yankees manager Joe Torre confirmed to CNN that the plane was Lidle’s, and “high-ranking city officials” told the Times that Lidle was a victim of the crash. It is unclear how many others died, and the one other confirmed victim has not been identified.
