Joints, Superman, Music, and Movies

Tonight’s boldfaced parties:

NYU Hospital for Joint Disease gala. Waldorf-Astoria, 301 Park Ave., nr. 49th St., 6:30. The entertainment will consist of a performance by Art Garfunkel and the raffle of an electric car, also known as “the worst raffle gift ever” — just getting it home involves driving an electric car! Potential electric-car winners to include Stone Phillips, Vanessa Trump, and a guy named Joel Smilow, who donated money to Yale in exchange for the honor of having the coach of the basketball team be officially known as “The Joel Smilow Class of 1954 Men’s Basketball Coach.” We bet the team abbreviates it as “coach.”

Christopher Reeve Foundation’s Magical Evening. Marriot Marquis, 1535 Broadway, nr. 45th St., 6 p.m. Featuring performances by Donny Osmond and the cast of Jersey Boys; guests to include Tom Kean Sr. and Bruce Ratner. If only it were Ratner performing for Osmond, instead of the other way around.
Music Has Power Awards. Allen Room at Rose Hall at Jazz at Lincoln Center, Broadway at 60th St. Scheduled to be in attendance: Dustin Hoffman, Oliver Sacks, Rob Thomas. Technically, actually, Thomas will be performing “in honor” of Dr. Sacks, which we find a little odd. “Hey, thanks for your immense contributions to society! To honor you, we have arranged a performance by a middlingly talented practitioner of a genre of music that you have little to no interest in.”
Sundance Institute 25th Anniversary. Metropolitan Pavilion, 125 W. 18th St., nr. Sixth Ave., 6:30 p.m. Scheduled guests include Robert Redford, Paul Newman, Glenn Close, Steve Buscemi, Harvey Keitel, Miranda July, Phoebe Cates and Kevin Kline, Jennifer Connelly, Clair Danes, Uma Thurman, and Stanley Tucci. A “custom dessert” will be provided by the Dancing Deer Baking Company. One time our high-school friends who worked at a joint Dunkin’ Donuts–Baskin Robbins made a “custom dessert” by combining every single edible item in the store. It included mustard.
