There’s nothing inherently wrong with this contest: J Condo — the surprisingly not-ugly 33-story building that sprung up, seemingly overnight, just north of Manhattan Bridge — is soliciting works from local artists to hang on its wall spaces. In fact, the initiative is perfectly in line with David Walentas’s master plan for Dumbo. It does make us wistful, however: Getting Dumbo artists to decorate a luxury condo is kind of like hiring the Yeah Yeah Yeahs to play jazz in the lobby of the Northside Piers. A little more disturbingly, the “future residents of the building” get to pick the winners. With J’s prices approaching $1,000 per square foot, we wonder what the makeup of the jury is going to be like — and, frankly, if the total prize kitty ($16,000) isn’t a little stingy.
