New York Sets TV-Pilot Record

So not only did last year set a record for the number of film-shoot days in the city, and not only is Brooklyn’s Steiner Studios doubling in size to attract more productions, but Crain’s reported this week that there are a record-setting ten television pilots currently in production in our fair city. This is good news for the city’s chronically Law & Order-employed classes, even if only a few of the pilots get picked up, and even if not all of the pickups necessarily continue shooting here. Mostly, though, we were curious about what’s in the works. And a few calls to the Mayor’s Office of Film, Theater, and Broadcasting provided a list. Some highlights: Lipstick Jungle, based on Sex and the City–creator Candace Bushnell’s novel (and starring Brooke Shields); Gossip Girls, based on the hugely successful sex- and money-obsessed teen-novel series that’s often called “teen Sex and the City“; and Dirty Sexy Money, from one of the producers of Sex and the City. Detecting a theme? Also notable: an as-yet-untitled pilot starring Glenn Close and Ted Danson; and M.O.N.Y., about a fictionalized mayor, produced by Tom Fontana and Barry Levinson, and directed — the pilot, at least — by Spike Lee.
