Hearst Corporation president and CEO Victor Ganzi is leaving his position, The Wall Street Journal reports. The twenty-year Hearst veteran began his term in 2002 when he took over for former CEO Frank Bennack Jr. The Journal gave no reason yet for his departure, but it must have come on short notice, as Bennack will step in again as CEO until a permanent replacement can be found. Bennack was president of the media giant for 23 years and is now the vice-president of the board. This could be a good day for Cathie Black, president of the Hearst Magazines group. In addition to their titles, like Cosmo, Town & Country, Harper’s Bazaar, and Good Housekeeping, the media conglomerate also controls large television and newspaper and online outlets. With Black’s background at Hearst and Gannett, combined with her terms as CEO of the Newspaper Association of America and president of the Magazine Publishers of America, she’d be a strong choice to replace Ganzi. But there are plenty of other candidates out there, including Hearst-Argyle Television CEO David Barrett and Hearst Interactive President Kenneth Bronfin, not to mention outsiders. Or Lydia Hearst, supermodel and journalist, for that matter. Let the speculation begin!
