Plaxico Burress and Sean Avery Suspended for Two Very Different Reasons

Not surprisingly, the Giants suspended Plaxico Burress for the final four games of the season yesterday for “conduct detrimental to the team,” and placed him on the non-football injury list. The suspension will cost him at least $823,529, and though it technically leaves the door open for him to return next year, it’s possible that the team may cut or trade him in the off-season. (Obviously, he may also face punishment beyond football suspension, especially if a certain mayor has his way.)

But while Burress was leaving Giants Stadium yesterday, our old pal Sean Avery was getting himself into trouble all the way on the other side of the continent for a very different reason. Avery, now a member of the Dallas Stars, was in Calgary to play the Flames and Dion Phaneuf, who is currently dating Avery’s ex, actress Elisha Cuthbert. So Avery, unprovoked, assembled reporters and said the following:

Uh, I’m really happy to be back in Calgary. I love Canada. And I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don’t know what that’s about. Enjoy the game tonight.

Avery was suspended indefinitely (pending a meeting with the commissioner) for violating a bylaw on conduct “detrimental to the league or the game of hockey.” In Avery’s defense, there is a pattern: Cuthbert also reportedly dated the Montreal Canadiens’ Mike Komisarek, and another ex — model Rachel Hunter — is engaged to the Kings’ Jarrett Stoll. What is the sports world coming to? You can’t carry a loaded gun into a nightclub or make fun of your ex-girlfriend in front of TV cameras? We’re telling ya, it’s a police state out there.
