James Brady, Formative New York Journalist, Dies at 80

James Brady started his reporting career in New York as a copy boy at the Daily News before heading off to fight in the Korean War. Upon his return, he wrote for Women’s Wear Daily and eventually rose to become publisher (learning about fashion from icons like Coco Chanel along the way). Then, once a brief, unhappy stint at Harper’s Bazaar was over, he helped Clay Felker grow New York by creating our own “Intelligencer” column. Rupert Murdoch would later bring him onboard to create an early iteration of Star, the weekly gossip rag, and to eventually take over New York when Murdoch wrested it away from Felker.

During his time with Murdoch, Brady created and edited “Page Six,” the New York Post’s legendary gossip column. Over the years he wrote many successful nonfiction books and novels, and kept up his celebrity “In Step With” PARADE column, for which he is perhaps currently best known, for nearly 25 years. He worked until the day he died, on Monday. His last column will appear on February 15.
