After a few weeks of conflicting news stories over what Obama has planned for Afghanistan, a secret report from the Joint Chiefs of Staff has surfaced regarding the focus of the troops there. According to Politico.com:
The Pentagon’s top military officers are recommending to President Barack Obama that he shift U.S. strategy in Afghanistan — to focus on ensuring regional stability and eliminating Taliban and al-Qaida safe havens in Pakistan, rather than on achieving lasting democracy and a thriving Afghan economy, officials said.
This will be a topic of conversation when Secretary Clinton meets with British Foreign Secretary David Miliband and German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier this week. Obama is expected by some generals to increase troop presence by about three brigades, or 10,000 men and women. But, and this is important, this is not a “surge,” because that would be practically Bushian. Is that clear? It’s really just more of a “gush.”
