Budget Travel Cuts Its Budget

Both the Times-owned Boston Globe and Budget Travel lost staffers, and another obscure magazine folded, in today’s media news.

• The Boston Globe cut twenty part-time positions and 24 employees took the Globe’s buyout offer and ran, as a result of budget cuts by the New York Times Company. [Poynter]

• Frommer’s Budget Travel laid off several people as “part of the company’s plan to control costs and restructure the business to better position the magazine for growth.” [FishbowlNY/Mediabistro]

• Another magazine carcass by the side of the road: The U.S. edition of Thompson’s Industrial Equipment News has folded. International editions remain stable. [FishbowlNY/Mediabistro]

• Numbers from the Newspaper Association of America indicate that ad revenue plummeted 16.6 percent in 2008. Next year could be worse. Just pretend this is a terrifying/fun freefall, like Nitro at Six Flags. [Poynter]
