First Mate May Have Played a Role in Getting Somali Hijackers Off Ship

While it’s still unclear how, exactly, the crew managed to deter the Somali pirates who attempted to hijack the Maersk Alabama in the Indian Ocean yesterday, forcing them onto a lifeboat (where they are still holding the captain), we suspect first mate Sean Murphy had something to do with it. As it turns out, Murphy’s father teaches a course in anti-piracy tactics at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, of which Sean himself is a graduate, so it’s likely he used those techniques to help extract the crew from the situation. Or maybe he used another method? Like The Method?

The L.A. Times reports that a few years ago, Murphy had a bit part in Thirteen Days, starring Kevin Costner.

Murphy landed a role as a Navy officer, but the camera caught only his hand and elbow, so he persuaded the director to recast him as a ship’s radio operator. He has no lines in the film but appears in another scene, frantically tapping out a Morse code message.”

We still don’t know what happened in real life, but in the movie version of this drama, the Sean character will definitely use his acting skills to save the day.
