After negotiations between Somali elders and U.S. officials broke down this morning when pirate allies refused to allow the captors to be arrested and brought to justice, the U.S. Navy moved to rescue hostage captain Richard Phillips by force. After a “swift firefight” that left three of the pirates dead and one wounded, the Navy recovered an unharmed Phillips. [NYT]
