Somehow, Daily News Resists Tying Hula-hoop Trend to Recession

We began reading today’s Daily News story examining the recent rise in hula-hooping-as-exercise fully expecting, almost reflexively, that the trend would be attributed to the recession. Considering everything else credited to the economic climate these days, this one would be a cinch: Hula-hoops are cheaper than gym memberships, they’re enjoyable and take your mind off layoffs and job stress, and they play to our nostalgia for a simpler, happier America. But, miraculously, writer Erin Durkin was somehow able to make it through the entire article without so much as mentioning the recession — and for that, we salute her. [NYDN]
