City to Reopen P.S. 151

The city has decided to reopen P.S. 151, an Upper East Side elementary school that was condemned and closed in 2001, subsequently compelling hundreds of area children to enter a lottery for admission to other city schools and creating a massive panic among parents, details of which can be found in this week’s New York. The decision should go some way toward easing the city’s kindergarten crunch, and parents are relieved. “I could not be happier,” one told the Post. But one wonders: How happy will they be when the meaning of “condemned” sinks in? [NYP]
