For a brief period in our lives, we tried working for a celebrity magazine, which once dispatched us to Ashlee Simpson’s hotel so that we could ask her how Jessica was doing after her divorce from Nick Lachey. During the roughly five to six hours we spent at the Ritz that evening in pursuit of the quote “She’s doing great!” we had a lot of time to think about where we had gone wrong in life that this was our job, and how odd it was that this was a job at all, and ever since, we’ve really appreciated those times when tabloids include a detail that reveals the bizarre and shameless lengths the reporter has gone to in order to extract utterly banal comment from a celebrity. Such as this little scene from this morning’s Post story about Billy Joel’s latest divorce:
Joel told The Post on the front porch of his Sagaponack spread that he “can’t talk about it.”
“Oh, boy, here we go,” he said. “It didn’t take you long to find me. Sorry, no comment. I don’t want to say anything.”
We do feel like we are missing one crucial detail of this stalking mission, though. Why does he seem surprised that the Post found him at his house? Was he crouching in the hedges or something?
