The practice of shackling female prisoners during childbirth, which apparently exists, has been outlawed in New York in almost all circumstances after Governor Paterson signed a ban into law yesterday. Opponents of the new law “point to the risk of escape posed by potentially dangerous inmates if they are left unshackled” — because that’s exactly what’s on a woman’s mind as a small person is making its way out of her vagina.
