This morning, President Obama announced that he’s altering President Bush’s plan for a missile shield comprised of a radar system in the Czech Republic and interceptor missiles based in Poland. Based on new intelligence on Iran’s capabilities, the new system “would deploy smaller SM-3 missiles, at first aboard ships and later probably either in southern Europe or Turkey, officials said.” This, Defense Secretary Robert Gates explained, “would provide the flexibility to move U.S. missile defense capabilities as may be needed.” That’s right, everyone this thing is mobile now. We see you over there, Azerbaijan. Don’t even think about it. [NYT, Reuters]
