Two Jurors Rejected in Bear Stearns Trial

Jury selection began today for the trial of Ralph Cioffi and Matthew Tannin, the two Bear Stearns fund managers charged with promoting their hedge funds as healthy while privately worrying that they were “toast,” and Judge Frederic Block has already tossed out two defendants he thought exhibited bias.

In a written questionnaire, one prospective juror said “people on Wall Street try to get away with wrongdoing” and another wrote that big financial firms “always try to bend the rules to make as much money as possible.”

Semantics. If that second one had said “people on Wall Street lie to make as much money as possible,” they probably would have just sailed right on by, since that is not bias but a baseline fact.
