We’ve previously reported that Democratic turnout for the primary elections last month was about 11 percent, and for the runoffs, about 7 percent. But those numbers mask the truly minuscule number of people who actually ended up picking the men who, because of a lack of real competition in the general election, will be the next public advocate and comptroller, the second and third highest-ranking citywide positions (or vice versa?). That turnout represents just registered Democrats, and some of those voters pulled the lever for other candidates. When you take into account everyone who did and didn’t vote, a mere 2 percent of New Yorkers actually elected Bill de Blasio and John Liu. Mandate!
