Hamid Karzai Has 99 Problems, But Voter Fraud Ain’t One

When Hamid Karzai cruised to victory in the election for president of Afghanistan in late August, there was one glaring problem — well, more than a million, actually. An investigation by the United Nations found that about a quarter of all votes cast in the election — 1,319,757 — were fraudulent, including 996,265 cast for Karzai. Once all the illegitimate votes were thrown out, Karzai’s total share fell below the 50 percent threshold, triggering a runoff election with second-place finisher Abdullah Abdullah. It was all going to go down this weekend, until Abdullah pulled out because he felt that this election would be rigged just as badly as the last one. So, with a runoff against nobody, Karzai has been declared the president of Afghanistan — fraud and all — once more. Twitter, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants an apology.
