“First of all, I have no friend[s],” wrote a user with the handle Farouk1986 on an Islamic forum on Gawaher.com in 2005. “Not because I do not socialise , etc but because either people do not want to get too close to me as they go partying and stuff while I don’t. or they are bad people who befriend me and influence me to do bad things … i have no one to speak too, no one to consult, no one to support me and i feel depressed and lonely. i do not know what to do.” [sic] News organizations like CNN and the Christian Science Monitor say that Farouk1986 is actually Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the 23-year-old Nigerian-born aspiring terrorist whose attempt to bomb a Northwestern Airlines flight landing in Detroit was thwarted on Christmas Day by fellow passengers and his own incompetence. In the absence of his own statements since the attempted attack, these words are all we’re going to get from him, probably for a while.
