The masterminds behind the 9/11 attacks will not be tried in lower Manhattan, the Obama administration announced Friday.
“I think I can acknowledge the obvious,” an administration official told the New York Times. “We’re considering other options.”
After initially supporting the plan, Mayor Michael Bloomberg spoke out against it earlier this week, claiming that the costs and logistics of holding the trial in New York were too great.
Numerous business leaders, officials and politicians - including Sens. Chuck Shumer and Kristen Gillibrand - had already issued objections to the proposed trial. It is not clear yet where Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four other accused plotters will be tried, though it will take place domestically. According to Fox News and the New York Post, this could mean holding the trials at Guantanamo.
