Students Probably Won’t Have to Pay for MetroCards After All

Back in mid-December the MTA passed its doomsday budget, which included, among other cockamamie schemes, a plan to do away with free MetroCards for students. Pretty much everyone thought this was a terrible idea and now one State Assemblyman has promised to fix it.

We’re going to deal with that in a timely way … and we’re very confident there’s going to be a good outcome,” Assemblyman Richard Brodsky said today during a break in a hearing on MTA finances. Couple that with City Council Speaker Christine Quinn’s rant against the plan yesterday, and it looks like disaster has been averted. That is, unless you’re a student who was really looking forward to dropping out of school and becoming a newsie.
