Here is something sad that maybe you didn’t know: Most of the time, when animals are caught in house fires here in New York City, they don’t make it out alive. But Daina Mielnik (one of only 33 women firefighters in the entire NYFD) battled those odds yesterday when she rescued a tiny toy terrier named DT. The dog was trapped in his cage in a smoke-filled apartment, and was barely breathing when it was rescued, whereupon Mielnik administered CPR. And also whereupon we learned something happy that maybe you didn’t know: In case this very situation arises, the FDNY is equipped with tiny, puppy-size oxygen masks.
