Weekend Storm Claims at Least Five Lives, Delays Everything

What the Times is calling “one of the most devastating storms in recent memory” is over, but not before claiming at least five lives. The NYPD received four times as many emergency calls as a usual Saturday night, as trees came out of the ground across the city. ConEd reported that about 167,000 customers were without power at certain points, many through Sunday morning, and outages at the West Fourth Street station created serious subway delays.

Amtrak, New Jersey Transit, and the Staten Island ferry all halted service in and around the city at different points, while some New Jersey Transit passengers were stranded for six hours after a loss of power on the Northeast Corridor line. As much as 6.62 inches of rain fell this weekend in parts of New Jersey just west of the city. Winds blew as fast as 75 mph, leaving the awning and gate at our corner store lying in a mangled heap across the sidewalk.
