Conservative Catholic Leaders Reacting More Strongly to Abuse Scandal

According to the Times, the conservative Catholic group the Paulus Institute disinvited Colombian cardinal Darío Castrillón Hoyos from preaching at a long-anticipated Latin mass for those who would see the Church at large go back to its more traditional services. The reason? Growing controversy over a letter Hoyos wrote in 2001 praising a French bishop for protecting a priest who had raped children from arrest by police. Meanwhile, conservative German Bishop Walter Mixa has offered to resign over accusations of physical abuse and financial misconduct, in order to give a “new start” to the Augsburg Diocese, which has been plagued by abuse scandals of late.
