Four Midtown Buildings Evacuated After Underground Fire

An underground fire caused by some overheated power cables led to the evacuation of four midtown buildings this afternoon due to reports of high levels of carbon monoxide. No one was injured in the blast, which blew off the top of a manhole cover on West 52nd Street and sent flames up to street level, drawing 135 firemen to combat the blaze. So now you can freak out about bedbugs when you’re sleeping, coyotes when you’re jogging by the river, and manhole explosions whenever you walk outside! [NYDN]
