In Cooperstown, A.G. Sulzberger Becomes the Story

This is cute: Times reporter and heir A.G. Sulzberger made such an impression up in Cooperstown, New York, while covering a shooting that the local paper, the Daily Star, decided to turn his visit into a story:

[Mayor Carol] Waller said Monday that reporter A.G. Sulzberger met with her and some other residents for a drink, but declined a dinner invitation, after his story was filed for The New York Times. “He had a diet Coke,” Waller said during an interview at her business, Mohican Flowers … Waller said Sulzberger had commented that he was on an expense account and asked about less-costly lodging than the Holiday Inn, and she referred him to a bed and breakfast operated by friends. But Sulzberger said he had broken a date with a new girlfriend for the Cooperstown assignment, and he wanted to make amends, Waller said, and the reporter left Monday night.

There are two takeaways from this. One, A.G. has a girlfriend! And two, all the rest of us writers should be so glad we’re not famous heirs, because if there was someone publishing the excuses we dished out to not spend the night, we’d all be in big trouble.
