Iraq Claims to Have Uncovered Al Qaeda Plot Targeting World Cup

Though the World Cup is still a month away, terror scares relating to the event have already begun to crop up. Iraqi security forces have detained an Al Qaeda militant suspected of plotting a “terrorist act” at the South Africa–hosted event next month, according to a Baghdad security-services official. The suspect, Abdullah Azam Saleh al-Qahtani, was a Saudi officer who entered Iraq in 2004 and has been suspected in several attacks in the country. Oddly, the South Africa police said they weren’t aware of the development. “We have not received any official reports from them,” a South Africa police spokesman told the AP. “Whatever arrest they made there, they know … we don’t know anything about it.”
