New Oil Spill Prevention Plan Involves Lots of Garbage

After BP’s failed attempt at using a massive dome to cover the source of oil steadily gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, the new plan is to stuff the failed blowout preventer with … lots and lots of trash. Engineers are currently investigating whether or not this so-called “junk shot” might work.

The next tactic is going to be something they call a junk shot,” Adm. Thad Allen, the commandant of the Coast Guard, said today on Face the Nation. “They’ll take a bunch of debris — shredded up tires, golf balls and things like that — and under very high pressure, shoot it into the preventer itself and see if they can clog it up and stop the leak.”

Next they will try banging the preventer a few times really hard. And if that doesn’t work, they’ll just, you know, turn it off and on a few times and hope that will solve it.
