After BP’s failed attempt at using a massive dome to cover the source of oil steadily gushing into the Gulf of Mexico, the new plan is to stuff the failed blowout preventer with lots and lots of trash. Engineers are currently investigating whether or not this so-called “junk shot” might work.
“The next tactic is going to be something they call a junk shot,” Adm. Thad Allen, the commandant of the Coast Guard, said today on Face the Nation. “They’ll take a bunch of debris — shredded up tires, golf balls and things like that — and under very high pressure, shoot it into the preventer itself and see if they can clog it up and stop the leak.”
Next they will try banging the preventer a few times really hard. And if that doesn’t work, they’ll just, you know, turn it off and on a few times and hope that will solve it.
