budget mess

Governor Paterson told legislative leaders today that they need to pass a budget — which is now eleven weeks overdue — by June 28, and without resorting to borrowing. If they fail to do so, he’ll put everything that’s left to resolve, including education cuts, into a final emergency spending bill, which the legislature can vote down at the risk of shutting down state government and turning New York into a post-apocalyptic free-for-all. “We will be out of here [by June 28],” he said. “You can plan your schedules.” [Daily Politics/NYDN]
