Japan’s Prime Minister to Resign

Japan’s prime minister, Yukio Hatoyama, announced Wednesday that he plans to resign from office. His approval ratings have declined in recent weeks, and he recently went back on a campaign promise when he determined that an American air base would be moved to the north side of Okinawa instead of off the island. He is the country’s fourth straight leader to quit after a year or less in office. [NYT]
