President Obama Says the Oil Spill Is Like 9/11

After all the talk about whether the oil spill would become President Obama’s Hurricane Katrina, it seems the man himself has a different comparison in mind. In an interview with Politico released yesterday, Obama said:

“In the same way that our view of our vulnerabilities and our foreign policy was shaped profoundly by 9/11, I think this disaster is going to shape how we think about the environment and energy for many years to come.”

As it does with every 9/11 comparison, the Daily News called up some 9/11 family members to see who was upset about the remark.

While it’s understandable that 9/11 families would be especially sensitive to 9/11 comparisons, as ridiculous as they often are — Carl Paladino and Glenn Beck are just two people who directly compared health-care reform (health-care reform!) to 9/11 — Obama is clearly not saying that the oil spill is as tragic as the terrorist attack that took thousands of lives, only that our policies will be affected significantly by both events. Hopefully, this indicates that Obama is finally ready to “seize the moment.”
