Apple Admits iPhone Was Just Pretending It Had Good Reception

Apple has heard the complaints about the iPhone 4’s “death grip” problem, in which foolish attempts to hold the phone in your hand result in poorer reception, and it has discovered a simple explanation. “Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong,” Apple said in a statement. “Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength.” People who report a drop in signal strength when holding the phone a certain way “are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.” Does that make sense? Either way, a software fix available in the coming weeks will allow the phone to display its mediocre signal strength more accurately.
