Arizona Appeals Partially Blocked Immigration Law

After yesterday’s ruling blocking the most controversial aspects of Arizona’s immigration law, which went into effect today, Governor Jan Brewer has announced she’s appealing the federal judge’s decision. She’s asking for an expedited appeal, with arguments set for mid-September. Most legal experts, though, have said the case will likely make its way up to the Supreme Court, meaning it could be a few years before a final verdict.

America is not going to sit back and allow the ongoing federal failures to continue,” Brewer said. “We are a nation of laws and we believe they need to be enforced. If the federal government wants to be in charge of illegal immigration and they want no help from states, it then needs to do its job. Arizona would not be faced with this problem if the federal government honored its responsibilities.”

Meanwhile, opponents of the law stormed Phoenix Thursday, blockading a jail and swarming the county sheriff’s office (the same county sheriff who had pledged to launch a “crime sweep” for illegal immigrants Thursday afternoon). About 100 police officers met the protesters, and arrested at least 50 of them.
