Charlie Rangel Is in Trouble

A House investigative subcommittee has found, after two years of inquiry, that 80-year-old Harlem Democrat Charlie Rangel violated congressional ethics rules. They have yet to reveal what, exactly, the violations were, but there’s a lot to choose from: It could be for renting four apartments at far below market price, doing favors for an oil-drilling company that promised to donate $1 million to an academic center in Rangel’s name, or failing to report taxable income from his villa in the Dominican Republic. Yet another subcommittee will now hold a trial on the findings. The last person who faced such a trial was Ohio Democrat James Traficant, who ended up serving seven years in prison. Obviously, this comes at a bad time for Rangel, who is facing a slew of primary challengers this year.
