Of the many odd and repellent-looking creatures in existence, the Times informs us today in their awesome if Huffington Post–esque feature on ugly animals, the ones that disturb people the most are the ones whose features recall deformed or distorted versions of humans. Such as the blobfish, “a pale, gelatinous deep-sea creature” that is distinctly reminiscent of the kind of sensitive young man many urban women find themselves entangled with in their twenties. Simultaneously revolting and adorable, it is “practically all face,” writer Natalie Angier observes:
Its “large-lipped, sad-sack expression seems to be melting toward the floor. ‘It looks like if you handled it,” said Geoffrey Miller, an evolutionary psychologist at the University of New Mexico, “at the very least you’d get some kind of rash.’”
