One-Fifth of Pakistan Under Water As the Country Turns Sixty-Three

Pakistan turns sixty-three today, but it’s been ravaged by epic floods owing to monsoon rains this week, and one-fifth of the country is under water to some degree, CNN reports. Nearly 1,400 people have died as a result of the flooding, and 875,000 homes have washed away or are damaged, the Pakistan Disaster Authority says, while “entire villages and towns have been transformed into vast lakes.” [CNN]
