In 2002, the CIA interrogated Ramzi Binalshibh, a “key facilitator” in the 9/11 attacks, in a clandestine Moroccan-run prison near Rabat. All evidence of the interrogation was thought to be destroyed, along with the tapes of two other Al-Qaeda operatives being waterboarded in 2005. But anonymous officials have recently revealed that in 2007 a staffer happened upon a box “tucked under a desk in the CIA’s Counterterrorism Center” with video and audio tapes of Binalshibh being questioned. The Justice Department is looking into why a federal judge was told that the Binalshibh tapes didn’t exist. If played at trial, the tapes could disclose Morocco’s role in Greystone, a CIA program to hold terrorists in secret overseas prisons and move them to other countries. We’re sure the staffer is being handsomely rewarded.
