9/11 Ceremonies Keep It Somber

Down near ground zero, church bells rang out at 8:46 a.m., the time when the first plane flew into the towers. Relatives of the victims are now reading the names of all 2,752 who died. President Obama is at the Pentagon today, while Michelle joined Laura Bush in visiting the Pennsylvania field where Flight 93 crashed.

Vice-President Biden spoke at the downtown ceremony, a short speech that took less than two minutes. “Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine,” he said, quoting the poet Mary Oliver. “Meanwhile, the world goes on, meanwhile, the sun and the clear pebbles of rain are moving across the landscapes.”
