In 2008, the paper’s crime reporter was slain as he was taking his daughters to school. In the past four years, 22 Mexican journalists have been killed and seven have gone missing. “Even in one of the places where violence is worst … El Diario was still doing a lot of good reporting on crime,” said Carlos Lauria, from the Committee to Protect Journalists. “The fact that they’re giving up is really bad.
