Espada Concedes Election to Rivera; Maloney and Rangel Victorious (Updated)

In an upset, Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr. is conceding the 33rd District State Senate seat to educator and activist Gustavo Rivera. Perhaps the recent spate of bad press is what did in Espada — who had nearly ten times the funding of his opponent. State Senator Hiram Monserrate also conceded in his long-shot bid in a primary against Francisco Moya, a former aide of David Paterson. In other House races, NY1 is calling the 14th Congressional District seat race for Democratic incumbent Carolyn Maloney, and the New York Times is calling the 15th Congressional District race for Charlie Rangel, who it looks like will continue his 40-year tenure in office. Meanwhile, Kirsten Gillibrand took the Democratic Senate primary. [Gothamist, NYT]
