A gas explosion this morning killed at least 21 workers and trapped 16 others at a coal mine in central China. The trapped miners have been located, but rescuers have yet to reach them. According to the Times, “Mining accidents are so common in China that they rarely make newspaper front pages.” Just this week, China closed over one thousand small coal mines as part of a plan to restructure the industry and prevent deadly accidents.
