Michelle Obama stopped by Harlem’s Police Athletic League Center to lead an exercise class for kids as part of “Let’s Move,” her campaign to improve children’s health through exercise and nutrition. Sounds like a vital program to us — who could have a problem with that? Oh, yeah. In workout clothes with minimal makeup, the First Lady looked like she was having a blast doing shuffle runs, push-ups, jumping jacks, and squats along with the children. Before the session, she told the crowd, “I don’t know if you know that spending time with young people like you guys is one of my favorite things to do as First Lady. Do you know that? … You gotta eat some vegetables, right?! You gotta turn off the video games and walk up and down the stairs!” Nine-year-old Alex Rodriguez told the Daily News, “Um, I had a lot of fun with her, especially doing the obstacle course with her. So it was a very good day.” Awww.
But she’s not the only half of the presidential couple winning folks over by working out with the kids. In an interview in the December issue of GQ, Joe Biden explains that double dates with the Obamas usually center around basketball games because Maisy, “my little number three granddaughter,” is on the same team as Sasha. In fact, the president has made time to host basketball clinics on the weekends.
Early this week, we’re at a national security thing and he says to me, ‘Hey, you know, Maisy is learning how to pick and roll.’ And I said, ‘Is that right?’ And he said, ‘Yeah.’ And he said, ‘Reggie [Love, his personal aide] and I had her over.’ He called my granddaughter to come to the White House on the weekend, because he thinks she’s a great athlete, and to teach her. So what he did was, he put on a little clinic with Reggie who played for Duke, with Sasha and my two granddaughters. ‘Okay, girls, doing drills!’’”
