A Short List of What Federal Oil-Rig Inspectors Aren’t Checking

A presidential commission found that when the 55 or so inspectors from the government’s newly revamped agency to oversee offshore drilling go out to examine the 3,500-plus oil platforms and drilling rigs under their purview, they don’t look for human error, systemic safety problems, poor decisions, cutting corners, or muddled responsibilities — otherwise known as the causes blamed for the Deepwater Horizon explosion.
