A Federal Judge Was Removed by Congress Today for Only Eighth Time Ever

The Senate convicted Louisiana U.S. District Judge G. Thomas Porteous on four articles of impeachment today, making him only the eighth federal judge in history, and the first since 1989, to receive such a fate. Porteous had accepted cash and favors from attorneys and bail bondsmen with business before the court, lied to the Senate during his confirmation hearings, and falsely filed for bankruptcy. His lawyer had tried to argue that “many of the practices — such as accepting favors and expensive meals — were common in the Louisiana legal community.” [AP via Google]
