Joe Biden Just Scared a Lot of People

As President Obama continues to fake evolve on the issue of gay marriage, Vice-President Joe Biden remarked in an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos today that the entire nation is evolving for real along with him. This is obviously true. The part that’s going to freak some people out is this:

I think there’s an inevitability for a national consensus on gay marriage. That is my view.

What gay-marriage opponents actually hear is, “The federal government is going to make you all get gay married to each other.” But in the near term there’s not much for them to fear.

How will gay marriage spread over the next few years? Various states could potentially legalize it, although more often than not they’ve been banning it. The Defense of Marriage Act could be repealed by Congress, but it won’t be, since Republicans control the House and could block anything in the Senate. Much more likely is that DOMA will be struck down by the courts, for good. But that wouldn’t change state laws and would hardly signal that a “national consensus” has been reached. A consensus will only happen with the passage of time, as older generations die off and their more enlightened progeny, for whom Ellen DeGeneres is as unthreatening as Walter Cronkite was 40 years ago, take over.
